VIDEO: Ugandan Parliament Passes Resolution Urging Government to fund KAPATU Project

The Parliament of Uganda made history by passing a significant resolution urging the Government of Uganda to support the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU) Project. The motion for free compulsory boarding school education for the Karamoja Sub-Region was presented by Hon. Achia Remigio, the MP of Pian County, Nabilatuk District, during a parliamentary regional sitting in Gulu City on 30th August 2024.

Rt. Hon Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, chaired the sitting.

The motion was amended by Hon. Lokii Peter Abrahams, MP Jie County, Kotido District, to include the Government of Uganda’s support for KAPATU.

Hon. Ochero Jimbricky Norman, the MP Labwor County, Hon. Nakut Faith Loru, Napak District Woman Representative, Hon. Lokii John Baptist, MP Matheniko County, and Hon. Dr. Lokeris Teko Peter, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, and MP for Chekwii County in Nakapiripirit District seconded this amendment.

The motion received overwhelming support from all members present during the sitting.

Prior to this development, in April 2024, the KAPATU Project was granted a Letter of Interim Authority by the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE). The project is currently in the process of being operationalized by KAPATU’s Strategic Leadership Committee.

The Strategic Leadership Committee, chaired by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, as the Founding Chancellor and deputized by H.E Jessica Alupo, the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, as the Founding University Deputy Chancellor and the University Chief Promoter, is overseeing the establishment of the university.

The KAPATU Project is a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Roman Catholic Church, The Catholic Lawyers Society International, and the Government of the Republic of Uganda.

Furthermore, the university’s main campus is located in Jie County in Kotido Municipality at Christ the King Catholic Parish, Losilang, Kotido District, Karamoja Sub-Region, North Eastern Uganda, East Africa.
