PM Nabbanja Confirms Gov’t Funding Commitment For Karamoja Peace And Technology University

Kampala, Uganda – East Africa.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja has confirmed the Government of Uganda’s full commitment to fund the upcoming Karamoja Peace And Technology University (KAPATU), starting from the next financial year (2024/2025).

“I am pleased to inform you that government funding towards the establishment and operation of the Karamoja Peace and Technology University will be included in next year’s (2024) national budget.” said the Prime Minister as she addressed a meeting with Executives of the Catholic Lawyers Society International (CLASI) at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in Kampala, on July 12.

Rt. Hon. Nabbanja also expressed government’s approval of the recent official launch of activities by CLASI, her appointment as a promoter of the upcoming university in Karamoja, and the CLASI’s ambition to transform society by advocating for justice for all people, regardless of creed.

The idea of establishing a university in Karamoja was conceived and launched by CLASI on April 29, 2023 as part of the organization’s project activities to be implemented across Uganda in the next three years.

The Karamoja sub-region is central to CLASI and Government’s objectives due to insecurity, under development, famine, homelessness and other negative factors that have plagued the sub region for the last 146 years.

The CLASI Executives delegation was led by The Rt. Rev.  Bishop Dominic Eibu MCCJ – Bishop Kotido Catholic Church Diocese, and included Mr. Twinobusingye Severino – President and Mr. Henry Kyarimpa – Corporation Secretary.

Also in attendance was the state minister for Northern Uganda, Hon. Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny, who is also the CLASI Chief Liaison Officer with the Government of Uganda and a promoter of the University.

Speaking during the meeting, CLASI President Mr. Twinobusingye Severino told the Prime Minister and other attendees that;

“The Karamoja Peace and Technology University is destined to play a pivotal role in the peace process and transformation of Karamoja, Turkana, South Sudan, South Ethiopia, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

The university’s educational infrastructure that will be based in Kotido Catholic Diocese Northern Uganda intends to solve the long-term issues of street children and unemployed Karachunas (reformed Karamojong warriors) by enrolling them in schools, starting from Nursery to University, and Technical Institutions.

The Catholic Lawyers Society International (CLASI) is a member of the global Roman Catholic intelligentsia; the legal professionals that educate, organize and inspire its members to faithfully uphold and bear true witness to the Catholic Faith in the study and practice of the law.
