Brief Overview And Experience

04/10/2019 – Current: Legal Officer, Uganda Human Rights Commission, Moroto – Uganda. 

Achievements and Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out research into thematic areas and other matters of the Regional Office and Commission interest.
  • Researching and preparing legal opinions.
  • Visit and inspect any place of detention i.e police, prisons, remand homes and army barracks.
  • Providing legal advice to the Regional Human Rights Officer and drafting legal opinions on issues pertaining to the Commission and complaints as they may arise.
  • Conducting mediation on cases brought to the Commission that warrant mediation.
  • Perusing investigated files and writing legal opinions on the next course of action.
  • Draft and advise on legal documents between the Regional Office and other parties such as service providers.
  • Receiving complaints and attending to complaints.
  • Occasionally participating in field activities outside the office.
  • Preparing reports in the office.
  • Participating in the development of systematic investigations framework in the office.
  • Preparing summons and hearing notices for Tribunal hearings.
  • Liaising with hearing Commissioners to fix cases for hearing.
  • Conducting Tribunal hearings and/ or give legal advice at Tribunal hearings to the Commission.
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the RHRO from time to time.

12/08/2019 – 03/10/2019: Volunteer – Legal, Uganda Human Rights Commission, Kampala – Uganda.

Achievements and Responsibilities:

  • Perused files that contained human rights violations.
  • Drafted documents such as hearing notices, legal opinions, clearance letters, referral letters, pleadings and extracted orders against the Attorney General.
  • Managed files between the head office and the regional offices.
  • Worked with the tribunal clerk on the allocation of files to the Commissioners.
  • Attended meetings of the Directorate of Complaints Investigations and Legal Services.
  • Interviewed and advised complainants on various legal matters.
  • Drafted referral letters for complainants’ whose issues were not under the mandate of the Commission.
  • Attended mediation hearings that were organized by the legal officers.

06/11/2017 – 31/05/2018: Programs Associate – Legal, Law And Advocacy For Women In Uganda, Kampala – Uganda.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day-to-day running of the projects including planning, preparing activity schedules & overall implementation of project activities.
  • Conduct follow-ups and liaisons with consultants, facilitators & project beneficiaries.
  • Provision of legal and referral services to the indigent.
  • Support the development of monitoring & evaluation tools including a results framework & templates for quarterly reports.
  • Prepare activity reports (narrative) as per project guidelines.
  • Advocate and lobby on behalf of the organisation in various national & international forums, working to build partnerships and maintain alliances.

05/02/2018 – 15/03/2018: Research Supervisor, International Women’s Human Rights Clinic, Georgetown University, Washington DC, Kampala – Uganda

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervised Georgetown Law Center students who were conducting a fact-finding research mission to Uganda for a report addressing Sexual Reproductive Health Rights & the dangers of polygamy.
  • Held bi-weekly conference calls and prepared narratives for the students in regards to the topics of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights

03/04/2017 – 05/06/2017: Intern – Uganda Human Rights Commission, Kampala – Uganda.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perused files that contained human rights violations.
  • Drafted documents such as hearing notices, legal opinions, clearance letters, referral letters, pleadings and extracted orders against the Attorney General.
  • Attended training on palliative care and the role of an advocate in the health sector.
  • Managed files between the head office and the regional offices.
  • Worked with the tribunal clerk on the allocation of files to the Commissioners.
  • Attended meetings of the Directorate of Complaints Investigations and Legal Services.
  • Interviewed and advised complainants that were sent to the Commission from the regional offices.
  • Drafted referral letters for complainants’ whose issues were not under the mandate of the Commission.
  • Attended mediation hearings that were organized by the legal officers.
  • Attended tribunal hearings at the Commissions’ Central office.
  • Part of the team that organized the launch of the 19 annual human rights report.
