Brief Overview And Experience
Jane is a Partner at KATS and heads the Firm’s Intellectual Property Department.
She has practised law for 22 years and is one of the leading lawyers in Uganda in the field of Intellectual Property; her practice includes protection of trademarks, service marks, collective marks, certification marks, industrial designs, patents, utility models locally and/or regionally at the Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO), and advising on international protection at the (World Intellectual Property Organisation) WIPO level.
She has undertaken numerous courses, specifically long distance courses offered by the WIPO Academy and attended several conferences on Intellectual Property in Europe, the United States of America and Southern Africa. She is a designated member of the International Trademark Association and has attended numerous workshops and educational seminars organised by the Association.
Additionally, she advises on licensing and franchising, domain names, intellectual property rights transfer agreements, prosecuting and/or defending infringement, passing off, expungement and opposition proceedings on trademarks, industrial designs, patents, utility models and copyright.
She has successfully represented several global brands in trademark related litigation protecting their Intellectual Property rights including but not limited to Dominos Pizza, John Murray Publications, Warid Telecom, Hydraform.
Her clients primarily consist of companies in pharmaceutical, packaging design products, telecommunication, manufacturers of beauty products and other general consumer goods, research and educational institutions, publishing and media companies, construction companies, sports, media and entertainment companies, artistes to mention but a few.
The 2020 Edition of the World Trademark Review recognized Jane’s work stating “Head of the practice Jane Akiteng brings more than 20 years of experience to the table and is an ever-reliable IP guide. She has scored trademark litigation victories for several well-known international brands and is a cogent choice for anything contentious.”
She is also an adept Arbitrator and Mediator having obtained certification from the Ugandan Center for Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADER).
Jane’s work also encompasses advising on Employment Law, Succession Law and general Domestic Relations Law. She regularly appears on Urban TV (a local television channel) to explain the intricacies of family law to the general public.
