As Publisher, of the Online/Digital Publisher — theKampalaReport: I am responsible for setting up and overseeing the strategic direction of the online publisher, and directing the business strategy.

Working with partners and teams, we keep a credible publishing and news media company, providing our audiences with a credible news and information platform, fact checking opportunities and creating a relationship between brands and their consumers.

theKampalaReport, is known for accurate, authoritative news content, diversity of opinion and analysis, covering the latest news and events from Uganda’s capital Kampala, the Ugandan countryside and East Africa region contexts.

2017 – Present: Editorial Director, PML Daily (www.pmldaily.com):

As Editorial Director of the Online/Digital Publisher — PML Daily, I am responsible for overseeing the editorial staff operations regarding content generation and production, setting the weekly agenda for editors, maintaining editorial calendars, running strategy and product development strategy and directing recruitment of talent.

Working with partners and teams, we keep a professional news site and have the task and mandate to develop future content packages for use across multiple platforms and use of metrics and analytics to drive content strategy.

2017 – Present: Media and PR Advisor/Consultant to the Secretary General, Uganda Episcopal Conference:

Responsible for the development of strategic communications materials, and developing write ups for the Communications function of the Catholic Church in Uganda. Efforts include support of the Church’s messaging function, development of strategic communications programs; offering media relations expertise, media strategy and coordination for the Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations, and the SECAM 2019 Golden Jubilee Celebrations, among others.

  • Developing content for the Bishops and Archbishop’s press briefings ahead of all media engagements.
  • Media coordination for press conferences, talk show appearances and live coverage for Church events.
  • Developing communication and visibility materials like banners , posters and bill boards.
  • Providing technical support of the Church’s brand messaging, development and implementation of the communication programs.
  • Coordinated the Catholic Church partnership with NEMA for the Tuve KuKaveera (anti-plastics) campaign in Uganda.

Responsible for leading the development of strategic communications programs and elevating the company profile. Efforts included support of the company’s brand messaging, development of strategic communications programs; media relations expert, media strategist and company spokesperson, executive thought leadership, vendor management, and budget management.

  • Developed and implemented the communication strategy for oil gas sector for the Ministry of Energy Uganda.
  • Developed the popular version of the UHRC annual reports for the Uganda Human Rights Commission.
  • Served as media strategist and spokesperson; responsible for identifying and building relationships with new and existing editors, reporters, producers, bloggers and tech analysts to increase media coverage for clients.
  • Supervised a team of staff, associate consultants and built capacity through coaching and mentoring in order to meet the strategic goals and business objectives while staying within the budget.

2014 – 2016: Associate Editor (News), The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

Responsible for reviewing and editing the work of staff or freelance writers, enforcing deadlines, and overseeing the production of newspapers and/or websites. I was also involved in reviewing other’s content and making the necessary changes, planning and assisting in the production, supervising news editors and other product editors and other related administrative duties.

  • Headed the newspaper’s coverage of His Holiness Pope Francis Visit to Uganda, in November 2015, which was considered the best coverage in the region.
  • Headed the newspaper’s 2016 Presidential and General Elections Coverage Desk which was also rated as one of the most comprehensive and balanced political reporting in the country.
  • Reviewed content and made adjustments before publication to make sure the newspaper upholds the highest editorial standards thereby enhancing its credibility.
  • Built capacity of staff through coaching and mentoring as part of the succession planning process.
  • Updated the newspaper’s editorial policy and social media policy as part of my KPI’s of developing policies and procedures and rolling them out.

2008 -2014: News Editor, The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

Responsible for deciding which news stories are printed in the newspaper long before the paper is published. I was also responsible for assigning reporters to cover the news, checking for accuracy and fairness in the newspaper’s articles, developing a daily news docket and also writing headlines.

  • Led the team that initiated the Nation Media Group Media Lab (a graduate training journalism initiative, which saw recruitment of talented young graduates from all disciplines. As a result, some of the key talented journalists and communicators in Uganda came from this initiative)
  • Managed the convergency of NMG African Correspondents, that saw increased and authoritative coverage of Africa and African issues from better contexts.
  • Built capacity of staff under me through coaching and mentoring hence improved productivity and performance of the company.
  • I critiqued the prior newspaper’s published and this helped in improving the quality of the production in terms of content.
  • Developed performance work plans and strategies for effective work performance.
  • Designed and produced content and also making all the modifications to improve on appearance.
  • Developed and monitored the utilisation of the department budget.
  • Organised the newspaper’s election coverage of 2011 elections and exclusively interviewed one key candidate in the race President Yoweri K. Museveni as part of the exclusive authoritative content

2006-2008: Investigations & Special Projects Editor, The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

  • Responsibilities included handling the newspapers big investigative projects and special events e.g. the special editions during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala, 2007.
  • Daily Monitor won the investigative journalism award of the year in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
  • Interviewed Mr. Don McKinnon, Common Wealth Secretary General, part of exclusive authoritative content.
  • Interviewed President Barack Obama (2005, Washington DC), as part of exclusive authoritative contents and a follow up of exposing the different corruption scandals we had investigated.

2005-2006: Senior Reporter & Head of Investigation Desk, The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

Responsible for producing long term investigations as well as contributing to our reporting on big ongoing stories. I was also overseeing the investigations by other Daily Monitor staff and freelances, ensuring that they meet our editorial standards and are legally safe.

  • Conducted thorough and expansive investigations around issues and key public interest topics, delivering exclusive stories for Daily Monitor investigative journalism.
  • Led the investigative efforts by other members of the Daily Monitor team as well as acting as a point of contact for freelancers offering stories to the programme.
  • Ensured fast, accurate and entertaining reporting. To deliver complex ideas clearly. To write and produce well-crafted and imaginative packages.
  • Forged relationships with other investigative organisations like the IGG and CID and Civil Society.

2001-2005: Senior Correspondent Politics & War — The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

I was a reporter assigned to cover stories and issues related to war and politics. I was stationed in the locations where the war is being fought, and observe conflict firsthand — South Sudan, Northern Uganda and the DR Congo. I also interviewed military personnel and civilians and also investigated stories and support claims made in my articles or reports.

  • Brought images and written accounts of major events.
  • Gathered information before presenting it to the public like war correspondents do.
  • Prepared reports by examining official documents, investigating tips, and interviewing sources, which can include military commanders, civilians, and soldiers.
  • Observed conflicts firsthand, correspondents sometimes embedded with combat units where I was exposed to dangerous environments since I often accompanied troops to the front lines.
  • Interviewed Salvar Kirr (South Sudan, 2001) Exclusive Content Gathering.
  • Other military personnel interviewed included (General Aronda Nyakairima (RIP), Gen. David Muhoozi, etc.

2000-2001: Retained Correspondent, The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

  • Was a correspondent covering general areas in education, health, politics and business, going up with regular news reports around public interest issues.
  • Became the newspaper’s specialist on money markets covering the forex reading extensively, and helped in the starting of the Forex Bureau Association of Uganda.
  • Was assigned to the education beat and covered both Higher Education and General education developments extensively.
  • Was voted the best employee of the year, 1999 an 2000.

1998-2000: Freelance Reporter, The Daily Monitor Newspaper:

  • Covered all university news, bringing timely content that brought it young readers to the newspaper.
  • Carried out research tasks as assigned by editors to come up with exclusive content for news reports.
  • Was assigned to the newspapers Mbarara Bureau to revive it’s news reporting function, a task I carried well that led to subsequent promotions.
